Blood Rust Whiskey.

" Blood Rust Whiskey " is the new CD from my friends and favourite Knoxville area band, Cutthroat Shamrock, now on their " Rowdy Soul " tour. There are some really great tunes on it, including " Fly Away, " " Long Gravel Road, " an instrumental called " The Banshee, " and a song about Popcorn Sutton and his " likker " called " Fire on the Breath. " If you like Celtic, Appalachian, Pirate, and/or acoustic punk, do yourself a favor and buy the CD. I call their music Appalachian Pirate Punkgrass.

DKM Knoxville show-November 2008

This is a re-post from my Dropkick Murphys website, www.knoxdkm.com.

" Thank you, Dropkick Murphys.

DKM rocked Knoxville tonight. I don't think the show was quite as long as their Boston Saint Patrick's Day shows I have attended, but it was an awesome show and Knoxville was certainly glad to have them. Ken Casey said from the stage that DKM was glad to finally be here, apologized for taking so long, and said that they will definitely be back. Let's hold him to that, Knoxville. While local favorites Cutthroat Shamrock were not on the bill, at least three fifths of Cutthroat Shamrock were present in the audience. Ben was even up front with my oldest nephew, Andrew, who tells me that while he didn't get on stage during the encore, he did " high five " Al Barr and Ken Casey."

Pics from the show are here.

Cutthroat Shamrock kicks it up a notch !

Last night's show at the Valarium saw both Jon Worley and Cutthroat Shamrock improving on a good thing. The Fox Hunt played a great set, but didn't add anything new since last time I heard them. ( I'm not suggesting that they need to do so, I'm just noting that they didn't. ) Worley played a good ( if short ) set, but this time brought cello and oboe into the mix. It was a good sound for him. When it was time for Cutthroat Shamrock to come on I felt like I was back in Boston for the 2003 or 2004 Dropkick Murphys shows. Just before the band took to the stage the lights went down. Then the bagpipes sounded. That's right. They added a piper. They also played many favourites ( old and more recent ), a few Irish traditional tunes and more Pogues than I've heard them do in a night before, including a great version of " A Pair of Brown Eyes. " It was definitely worth the cover and more. They have new merchandise, too, including sturdy pint glasses for $5 each.

PPNOM collection.

Alright, I admit I took my time in ordering my copies because of my own financial issues, but I finally got my copies of Lafitte's Return Volume 1 & Volume 2. In addition to helping to preserve New Orleans music by contributing the profit to the school music programs there, these CD's kick ass. There are many great pirate-themed bands and tunes on these discs, including my friends in Cutthroat Shamrock. Click here to order.
